Carolyn Partleton: Pentecost and Easter copes

Title:  Pentecost and Easter copes
Artist: Carolyn Partleton
Location: Wells Cathedral, Somerset
Date: 2021

This work was shortlisted for the A+C Award for a permanent art commission within the building or grounds of a place of worship in the UK 2026.

Bryan Biggs, chair of the judging panel for the A+CAward for a permanent art commission writes:

“We started [our judging site visits] in the West Country at Wells Cathedral, visiting Carolyn Partleton’s Easter and Pentecost Copes, completed in 2021. The artist described to us her approach to ecclesiastical needlework and the intricate skill employed to create these two richly detailed copes. The garments are not however merely decorative; they are theological statements, incorporating traditional Christian iconography, and are worn during processions for Easter and Pentecost to signify the dignity of worship and the continuity of sacred tradition.

Having this liturgical and spiritual function, they are described as “woven prayers that embody the Cathedral’s mission to unite artistry and devotion in the service of God”. The designs represent a visual and biblical narrative through woven and embroidered techniques and are exquisite examples of contemporary crafts. We could not resist trying on one of the copes!

Against the Cathedral’s interior of muted stone, the richly coloured garments have a presence that resonates with the preexisting fabric art collection, further enhancing Wells’ position as a national centre for excellence in sacred textile arts and a commitment to liturgical beauty and craftsmanship. They complement earlier commissioned tapestries and altar furnishings, forming a cohesive suite of sacred art that integrates theology, history, and design.
