Eduardo Paolozzi: Stained glass windows
Title: Stained glass windows
Artist: Eduardo Paolozzi (1924-2005, Scottish)
Location: St Mary’s Episcopal Cathedral, Edinburgh (Scottish Episcopal Church)
Date: 2000–05
‘This window was designed by Eduardo Paolozzi, who was born in Leith, to replace the plain glass rose and lancets in the Resurrection Chapel. Given in memory of Mary Carmichael, a much loved member of the congregation, it was dedicated in October 2002. When the sun floods through the window, it transforms the plain stone and woodwork into a kaleidoscope of colour.’
Born to Italian parents in Edinburgh, Eduardo Paolozzi was a prolific sculptor, collagist and print maker. He is widely regarded as one of the fathers of British Pop Art. During the 1940s he studied at Edinburgh College of Art and St Martin’s School of Art before attending the Slade School of Art from 1945–7. After finishing his studies Paolozzi spent several years in Paris, where he knew Giacometti and Leger, and was influenced by the work of the Surrealists and Dadaists.
Throughout his career Paolozzi held academic posts. In 1994 Paolozzi gave the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art a large body of his works, and much of the content of his artist’s studio.
