Angela Conner: Reredos sculpture
Title: Reredos sculpture
Artist: Angela Conner, (b. 1935, British)
Location: Altar, St Andrew’s, Cuffley (C of E)
Date: 1967
This striking sculpture gives a dynamic focus to the church which takes a simple tent-like form. Behind the austere altar table the outstretched arms of the reflected figure invoke a well-proportioned ellipsis on the east wall.
Angela Conner (b. 1935, British) is ‘one of Britain’s most prolific sculptors who, for over 40 years, has created Europe’s largest mobile sculptures as well as acclaimed portraits […] Conner developed her professional foundation working in Dame Barbara Hepworth’s celebrated Cornwall studio […] Conner went on to develop her signature fascination with the movement in nature […] Whilst vast in scale and impressive in material, Conner’s work is characterised by the contrasting simplicity of the mechanics she engineers specifically to realise the mobile aspects of each design.’ (Source: Angela Conner).
